Dog abandonment is a real issue, with shelters overflowing with animals. Many abandoned dogs end up euthanized or struggling to survive on the streets. It may feel like there’s not much we can do, but even one person can make a massive impact on the life of a dog.
In central Greece, three volunteer women have come together to rescue dogs from abandonment, abuse, and neglect, and they’ve formed a non-profit to do so: Diasozo Animal Rescue (DAR).
When one of the rescue volunteers and founders, Ermioni, heard of a dog abandoned in a nearby cemetery, she immediately jumped into action.
When she arrived at the cemetery, it took a few minutes of searching but she eventually found the dog. The poor puppy had been left for dead among the gravestones and was so weak, she was barely hanging onto life.
Thankfully, Ermioni was able to get her back to safety and get her started on life-saving treatment. At the veterinarian, they discovered the pup, who they named Ann, was suffering from parvo, severe diarrhea, dehydration. She was also covered in fleas, feces, worms, and flies.
“It was a hard image to see,” Ermioni said in a video about the rescue.
Little Ann proved to be a fighter, and with the help of a good medical team and a lot of love and care, she began to recover! She pulled out the strength to carry on, and now she’s thriving in the care of the rescue.
Ann will soon be available for adoption and will get the happily ever after she deserves. Watch the rescue video below:
